Retailer Spotlight Asrai Garden

Next time you are in Chicago it's worth your time to check out Asrai Garden in the Bucktown area. The owner Elizabeth, who I met through Skin & Bones designer Jasmin, was our very first retailer.

This was a big deal for us, shipping to a brick and mortar retailer was kinda scary. What if people don't like it? What if it doesn't sell? Before Asrai all our customers were friends, family and fans buying from our website. We shipped the order April 2010 and I crossed my fingers.

A few weeks later Elizabeth emailed and needed to reorder, sold out! I started crying on the spot. I was so excited and so grateful people loved Skin & Bones as much as we did.

The Asrai boutique is gorgeous and Elizabeth is the epitome of badass. When you visit the boutique you are greeted by her talented staff and you can't miss Elizabeth, visit and you will discover an artist with intoxicating passion for life. Her curating is absolutely amazing and it's like a little treasure hunt in the store - everywhere you look you find something you swear was just not there a minute ago.

Looking for one of a kind, out of this world flower arrangements, look no further than Asrai. Elizabeth and her staff of designers craft extraordinary arrangements for any occasion or to complement any environment. Last time I was there she was making an arrangement out of radishes, it was uniquely beautiful.

Not just flowers in Asrai, besides Skin & Bones you will find the brands John Derian, beetle & flor, further, tamar, brooklyn rehab, austin press, mor, santa maria novella, the great lakes goods, and much more...

Visit Asrai, it is a destination worth your attention. When you do visit please share your experience with us (pictures are good) and we will share with all our fans. Cheers.

Visit Asrai Garden

Why You Should Put Jojoba Oil On Your Face

If you are having skin problems leave out your other products and put jojoba on your face and body - just for a day or two.

You can't put too much on and it absorbs quickly and will not stain your sheets or clothing. Once I started using jojoba it was the first time in my life I received compliments on my skin - I was 37. I know what you are thinking, that putting jojoba "oil" on your face will cause acne. Since I have started jojoba oil I haven't had a zit in three years.

Bad past experiences with skin care have made all of us paranoid about what we put on our faces. When you really think about it - have you ever put an organic oil on your face? More than likely what caused your bad experience was lotion. Lotion can be bad - synthetics, water and alcohol being the main ingredients. Water and alcohol evaporate immediately and its only purpose is to make the jar/bottle look fuller - what's left left are harmful chemicals. Worse than that, lotion is specifically made so it needs to be reapplied all day.

Not to knock lotions - but if you are really looking to clear up skin ailments and even out skin tone - jojoba oil is the answer. Especially if you are looking to eliminate chemicals from your regimen.

Jojoba (pronounced ho-HO-ba) is a botanical extract of the seed of the jojoba tree (Simmondsia chinenis). Jojoba isn't actually an oil, but rather a wax ester. Out of all of the compounds in nature, the jojoba wax ester is the most similar to human skin oil (sebum). It is theorized that applying jojoba to the skin can "trick" the skin into thinking it is producing enough oil, thus balancing oil production. Additionally, jojoba oil is non-comedogenic so it is safe for all skin types - especially sensitive skin.

Benefits of jojoba:

- Natural anti-bacterial
- Cleans skin at the pore level and keeps it clean
- Mimics our skin so it won't over do it
- Jojoba works with all skin types
- It lets your skin breath
- Heals scars, pores, stretch marks and dark spots
- It clears current acne and prevents acne
- Works under make-up and keeps dirty make-up from getting in pores
- Evens out skin tone so you get a glow instead of a sheen
- Great for oily and dry skin
- Clears away acne, eczema, psoriasis, rosacea, rashes, and bumps
- Moisturizes scalp and hair
- Use it as a before and after shaving cream
- It's safe for everyone - even babies
- Don't have to reapply all day

Life is easier without skin problems, so here is to clean, clear, healthy, glowing skin - without the worry of long term effects of chemicals.

The Face, Body, Hair Oil ($50) is one-man show in which Jojoba oil takes center stage. In succession, 9 characters – all of which provoke immediate, visceral reactions and culminate in hitting the high note of scent – each inhabit its own righteous spot in a darkly protective bottle. To give you some smooth moves are Frankincense, Myrrh, Ylang Ylang, Grapefruit, Jasmine, Cedarwood, Lemon, Rosewood and Sandalwood, all of which manage to lure you into a highly evocative state of floral trance. The an unwavering attention to detail in this treatment is marked with the thrilling levels of pure, therapeutic grade absolutes. The highest concentrations of essences seen thus far, proving yet again that these precious commodities can be anything but dull...

liminas magazine skin and bones organic moisturizer

Is your frequent flier status destroying your skin, beauty, and sleep regimen?

Whether you’re flying for business or pleasure, looking and feeling great is a must. Yet there’s really nothing spa-like about cruising at 35,000 feet confined to a small cabin filled with crying babies and dehydrated air.  {We bet just reading that line gave you anxiety, right?}

Luckily, with a number of flights under our belts, we’ve perfected the art of air travel. Follow our stylish and savvy flying guide and you’ll step off the plane looking and feeling energized and refreshed, no matter what in-air obstacles you face.

Stylish Flying

PRE-FLIGHT PREP

Choose the ideal seat – Grab the aisle seat to avoid excess UV rays and for easy mobility about the plane. Visit Seat Guru to find the perfect location by learning the specifics of your plane and finding where the amenities are located. Seat Guru will tell you where to find the good, standard, and poor seats, and which ones have some drawbacks. You’ll also find the location of power ports, overhead TVs, and the bathrooms to help you better make your seat selection.

Bring your own headphones – Don’t rely on the airline’s headphones which mess up your hair and rarely ever fit your head. Plus, who wants to waste a couple dollars on a pair of crappy headphones that you’ll never use again? Bring noise canceling headphones {Bose makes an excellent set that are well worth their hefty price tag} and not only will you be able to hear the movies better, but you’ll also drown out the crying baby in the seat behind you, the constant dinging for the flight attendant’s attention from the over-anxious grandma across the aisle, and the incessant chatter of the new BFF teens in the two seats to your left.

Bring a Snack – Unless you’re flying Virgin America, the food offered on airlines isn’t what we would call desirable. Check Airline Meals before you fly to find out what’s offered on your flight and if it’s necessary to pack your own meal (which it usually is).

Entertainment – Bring gossip magazines, your ipod, a book & a book light and you’ll never run out of things to do. If you have an iphone, check out AppAdvice to find the latest and greatest in the app world.

Sleep Easy – Ear plugs and a neck pillow are a necessity for dozing. The BEST neck pillow we’ve found to date is Brookstone’s n•a•p® Travel U-Pillow. On a long international flight it might also be a good idea to take a sleeping aid—we recommend something natural like Melatonin, which you can find at any health food store or online at The Natural Store .

IN-AIR PAMPERING

Drink lots of water – We all know that airplanes act as a drying agent, leaching water and moisture from your skin and body. Avoid a large consumption of caffeine and alcohol, which could result in even greater dehydration. Stay hydrated by drinking lots of water! Buy a large bottle before you board (post-security, of course) and you won’t fall victim to dehydration – the requisite bathroom trips are worth it {trust us}!

Eye Serum – Put on a moisturizing eye serum like just before the flight to help battle the often unavoidable eye puffiness. Try all-natural JURLIQUE Herbal Recovery Eye Gel.

Moisturizing lotion - Airplanes have ultra low humidity creating a moisture vacuum in the cabin air that sucks your skin dry, depleting if of all that plumping moisture. Can you say wrinkles?? Bring a moisturizing lotion and reapply often. Try Skin & Bones Power Of One. It’s unisex and multi-purpose, so you can use this single product for all your skin care and body needs—it’s a natural choice for travel. Share it with the man in your life or play the “angel of the air” and save the skin of the hot stranger sitting beside you.

Exercise – Ok, so we get that busting out a downward dog might be infeasible in Economy (and, well, also extremely awkward for the other passengers), but that doesn’t mean you can’t get some activity while in-flight. The best exercises involve stretching and flexing your muscles and anything that let’s you move your joints—check out Boeing’s guide to super easy in-seat exercises.

UPON ARRIVAL

Concealer – A must for hiding those “I had the middle seat” dark circles under your eyes. We like theVincent Longo Duo concealer–it offers two shades in a compact, travel-friendly tube {it looks like lipstick}, so you’ll be prepared to cover dark circles and anything else that might pop-up mid-flight {pun intended}.

Dry Shampoo – To combat oily or limp hair that routinely is the result of a long international flight spent with your head pressed against a polyester headrest. Try Bumble&Bumble hair powder.

Make-Up Remover – If you were able to get some shut-eye in the air, chances are you’ve awoken to find your mascara and eyeliner smudged and smeared across your face emulating a batman mask. Use skyn Iceland’s Glacial Cleansing Cloths to combat blotched make-up. With a non-drying formula, they’re ideal for your in-flight needs.

Visine – No one wants to walk off the plane looking like a vampire with red, bloodshot eyes, just another consequence of parched air. A couple of drops of Visine should help you get your eyes back to human-like whiteness and alleviate any of the itching or discomfort that can result from the arid cabin conditions.

Bon Voyage!

~Lauren & Ashley

Six Reasons To Love Jojoba Oil

1. Closest Thing To Our Skins Natural Oil

Jojoba Oil comes from the seeds of the Jojoba shrub. Jojoba Oil technically isn't oil, but a pure and luxurious liquid wax ester. Jojoba Oil is a long-chain wax ester, not a triglyceride - making it very similar to the Sebum your skin produces (via the sebaceous oil gland). Sebum's job is to retain moisture, keep skin smooth, elastic and provide an environmental barrier for the skin. Native Americans have been using Jojoba Oil for centuries as it is one of the closest things to our natural Sebum on the planet. Because Jojoba Oil structure closely resembles our own Sebum, Jojoba has a natural affinity to the skin and is readily absorbed without making the skin feel greasy or tacky, nor does it clog the pores. Additionally, studies show that five of the most common skin bacteria plus certain skin fungi couldn't survive in Jojoba Oil. Rarely does Jojoba cause allergic reactions and it helps balance oil of all skin types - even the most sensitive skin and the oiliest.

2. Promotes Healing - Including Acne

Oil would be the last thing you might think would heal your skin or help acne, think again. Studies have shown that Jojoba Oil can actually help to unblock the pores and may also prevent further clogging, helping to keep your skin healthy. Jojoba naturally treats acne rather than just thesymptoms. It tricks your skin to regulate theproduction of Sebum, which can be the pore clogging culprit. Jojoba contains antimicrobialproperties, which means it discourages growthof some bacterial and fungal microbes that attack the pores andcause pimples. And it leaves skinmoisturized without the greasy sheen and glare.

3. Works Well Under Make-up

Because Jojoba acts like a natural Sebum, fills pores with goodness and is antimicrobial, it is perfect to use before applying make-up. By applying Jojoba first, your make-up will have a real hard time clogging your pores and causing one of those untimely pimple flare-ups. Pay attention to your make-up ingredients, use make-up that is free of harmful chemicals, parabens, and toxins. And just throw out old and dirty make-up, not worth the risk to your skin. With this overall approach you and your make-up will look and feel great.

4. Jojoba Oil Is Great For Hair

Just like on your skin, Jojoba works with hair follicles in an almost identical way. Jojoba breaks down excessive Sebum production on the scalp, while allowing pores and hair follicles to transpire normally. Jojoba reconditions the scalp, hair follicles and shafts to bring back luster and shine. As we age and Sebum production decreases, hair can become brittle and weak. Jojoba strengthens, moisturizes and refreshes your hair.

5. Multifunctional

Jojoba eliminates the overwhelming process of choosing a great skin and body care moisturizer. Instead of purchasing multiple products for every use, Jojoba is multi-use and can be used to moisturize your face, neck, stomach, legs, hands and feet. Deal with wrinkles, heal cuticles, energize scalps and hair follicles, tame and condition hair, etc. Additionally it can be used by men, women, children and babies and is safe for all skin types. According to Dr. Wexler in the book "Making Faces," by Kevin Aucoin, "You only need one good moisturizer. This is why it is important to choose one that has ingredients you recognize and are good for you."

6. Safe And Chemical Free

Everything we put on our skin goes directly to our bloodstream and affects us on a cellular level. There is a theory that the reasons we have epidemic depression levels and hormone imbalances is partly caused by all of the petrochemicals and toxins we put on and in our bodies every day. Know one really knows the side effects of all of the petrochemicals in our skin care products, but why risk it? Jojoba is a safe alternative while containing powerful antioxidants and nutrients such as vitamin E, B complex vitamins, and healthy minerals. Make sure the Jojoba Oil is certified organic and as pure as possible.

The bottom line is nature created something phenomenal with Jojoba Oil. Its benefits, uses and reasons way out number these six. Do yourself a favor; do your skin a favor, use organic natural ingredients like Jojoba in your skin care regiment. Love your skin.

Blisstree.com Skin & Bones Review

Packaged in a sleek almost-black purple bottle, with a label that looks like an upscale tattoo shop logo, Skin & Bones is a skincare product that, at least visually, stands out in the pack of natural, chemical-free beauty products. Business founders Heidi and Eric Jenkins have caught onto something that we at Blisstree can appreciate: Not everyone who wants a natural, therapeutic product is a pigtail-wearing, yoga-mat toting hippie! It’s tough, fashionable, and doesn’t look like a yoga retreat in a bottle. So I got my hands on some of the stuff to give it a whirl... read full review here

Benefits of Jojoba

Jojoba Benefit: Unsurpassed Multifunctionality The best solution for dry skin is now flowing from jojoba trees in our hottest, driest deserts. It is highly effective jojoba oil. Nature took millions of years to perfect jojoba, a unique array of liquid wax esters that are almost identical to those of our own skin. As we mature beyond early adulthood, our skin produces less and less lipids, resulting in wrinkles and more fragile drier skin. Jojoba's rapid absorption just deep enough into the skin's surface layer (stratum corneum) provides all-day moisturization that leaves the skin feeling soft and smooth. Nature has perfected only one ideal ester replacement for us...that is Pure Natural Jojoba (PNJ). Jojoba functionality is now widely known.

Jojoba Benefit: Semi-occlusive Moisture Control

Jojoba and the skin's sebum are completely miscible. They form a non-greasy, non-tacky layer with exceptional transepidermal water control. The value of jojoba's precise non-occlusive moisture control is evident. Occlusive materials such as lanolin, mineral oil and petrolatum can cause micro-inflammation and anaerobic microbial growth in and around pores with subsequent off-odor. Maintenance of water permeability is also important in the stratum corneum repair response. Long-acting moisture control is only one of the qualities that make natural jojoba oil an increasingly attractive ingredient for both formulators and today's careful consumers. Jojoba efficacy has become well established.

Jojoba Benefit: Skin and Hair Emolliency

Jojoba gives a unique favorable texture to the skin. Unacceptable glare and greasy feel is suppressed. Jojoba is the closest thing to the human skin and has an excellent natural afterfeel. Jojoba spreads well, does not shine, is moist to touch makes the skin softer, smoother and reduces fine-line wrinkles.

As sebum production decreases, hair can become brittle and weak. Jojoba reconditions hair follicles and shafts for natural luster and shine. If sebum production is excessive, hair follicles can become blocked and hair can also become too dry and breakable. Jojoba dissolves excess sebum and allows pores to transpire normally. It can also dissolve sticky residue from hair products and airborne pollutants.

Jojoba Benefit: Oxidative Stability Adds Shelf Life

Jojoba's extreme oxidative stability adds shelf life to products and reduces the need for anti-oxidants, preservatives and stabilizers. The growing evidence of the harmful effects of oxygen free radicals in many conditions increases the importance of continued oxidative stability after application. Natural jojoba oil's unique esters and three types of tocopherols give it extraordinary oxidative and thermal stability. Jojoba's flammability at 640 F is even superior to silicone's at 400-500 F . Jojoba's nonvolatility reduces VOC's. It can be stored for long periods of time without becoming rancid or depleting antioxidants.

Jojoba Benefit: Well Established Safety

The safety of natural jojoba oil is well established (see Tech Info). Jojoba is not an irritant to the eyes or skin, is neither allergenic nor comedogenic and does not promote contact sensitization. University of Michigan studies conclude that five common bacteria including Staphylococcus aureus and Psuedomonas as well as the fungus Candida albicans were not capable of growing in jojoba oil. In addition to these studies, use of thousands of products containing jojoba by millions of consumers over the past 25 years without adverse effects attests to its safety.

Natural jojoba's moisture control and superb emolliency can help meet today's requirement for simpler ingredient lists by replacing combinations of mineral oil, triglycerides, lanolin, squalene and synthetic esters. Its oxidative stability, thermal stability and lack of support for microbial growth can also decrease your product's de

Therapeutic Essential Oils:

Therapeutic grade oils are distilled slowly and carefully in order to maintain the maximum essential elements. The live plants selected for distillation are organic or wild, exceptionally healthy, and harvested at the peak of their potency. In a laboratory, each batch of oil is tested, and certified to meet standards for purity and botanical composition. Traditionally, certain healing properties have been associated with particular essential oils. To obtain these traditional benefits, you must use only the purest essential oils, and use them when they are still fresh and alive. (therapeuticoils.com)

What are the Benefits of Therapeutic Grade Essential Oils?

Essential oils are so small in molecular size that they can quickly penetrate the tissues of the skin.

Essential oils are lipid soluble and are capable of penetrating cell membranes, even if the membranes have hardened because of an oxygen deficiency. According to Jean Valnet, M.D., essential oils can effect every cell of the body within 20 minutes and are then metabolized like other nutrients

Essential oils contain oxygen molecules which help to transport nutrients to starving human cells. Because a nutritional deficiency is an oxygen deficiency, disease begins when cells lack the oxygen for proper nutrient assimilation. By providing the needed oxygen, essential oils also work to enhance the immune system.

Essential oils are very powerful antioxidants that create an unfriendly environment for damaging free radicals. They may prevent mutations, fungus, and oxidation in cells, and work as free-radical scavengers.

Essential oils are antibacterial, anti-cancerous, anti-fungal, anti-infectious, anti-microbial, anti-tumoral, anti-parasitic, anti-viral, and antiseptic. Some essential oils have been shown to destroy all tested bacteria and viruses while simultaneously restoring physiological balance to the body.

Essential oils containing sesquiterpenes have the ability to pass the blood-brain barrier.

Essential oils promote emotional, physical, and spiritual well being.*

Therapeutic Oils have some very unique properties. Essential Oils are not greasy or heavy; they are of a water consistency, and usually evaporate within hours, if placed on a cotton ball.

Skin & Bones is only one product, but it does everything except fold your laundry. Moisturize your face and body, deal with wrinkles, heal cuticles, everything. Hard to believe, but true.

S&B's organic essential oil is made of the best smelling things - jojoba, ylang ylang, rosewood, lemon, frankincense, myrrh, sandalwood, jasmine, grapefruit and cedarwood. So not only does it actually work for just about everything, but it smells amazing and could literally pass for a unisex cologne. It's even safe to use on your kids and pets. And I'm not even going to get started on that awesome packaging and branding (check out the story of the bottle).
